Semester 2 - Week 10 Brinkley

 This week consisted of a pig eye surgery, more manufacturing, testing, and del 7. 


In class this week we did the broader impacts discussion and we preformed the pig eye simulation. I believe that the broader impacts format was much better than the essay that students used to have to do. 


When we went into the lab to do the surgery simulation we all set up all of the tools and suited up in our scrubs and gloves. Alex was the "main surgeon", Kierstin was the "assistant", and I took notes and pictures. The surgery went really well and we were able to insert the valve into the eye. We did the surgery in all three quadrants because the first two proved to be more difficult, but with a little practice we were able to do it. Here are the notes from the surgery: 

Quad 1:

  • Tried quad 1, cut through the pocket so moved to second quadrant 


Quad 2: 

  • Poked through again, but tried to salvage
  • Pocket is proving to be very difficult to make
  • Was able to stretch muscle over valve, there was a hole still and valve was slightly too big 
  • Tried to insert smaller valve, it worked better 
  • When suturing poked through again, suturing was much more difficult then expected but we got the valve secured into place
  • Did not have the correct needle, so we could not puncture the tube through the eye, but was a good learning 


Quad 3: 

  • Tried for another pocket and it worked, implanted the valve and it worked the best so far
  • This suture went much better and the valve was secured into place

We created one prototype with three working Ahmed's on a thin plate. We also made multiple of the thin plates to uses for pig eye testing, so we do not have to waste Ahmed valves for that. The manufacturing that Kierstin and I worked on was attaching the valves onto one plate, this is shown here: 





We also tested each of the Ahmed valves separately in our design and these were the values we got:

This week consisted of a lot of brainstorming, planning, and researching. I also contacted the client multiple times to figure out a shake down test we will be doing soon, and to update our deliverable 1 and 3. I also worked on making tasks and timeline for deliverable 2.  Brainstorm:  Decided on a remolded Ahmed valve with rubber material resistance (elastic) with a possible dissolving factor. Semester 2 Week 12 - Brinkley

 This week in class we discussed with Gordon what needed to be changed and updated on the poster. The notes he had for us were to better explain the reasoning for the three valves and what issues they solve. We updated the poster with these images and explanations.  During lab time, data was collected on our prototype. We were able to find when the 3 valves open and at what pressures. Valve 3 seems to have a defect because even at extremely high pressures it does not open. This is not a fault in our design, but is caused by using faulty Ahmed valves. Semester 2 - Week 13 Kierstin

  Lab time:  This week we did our pig head surgery simulation for our verification testing on surgical procedures, and if the device is mobile or not.  Our pig arrived in a box full of packing peanuts. It was very heavy and surprisingly very clean.  We unpackaged the head and placed it in our pre-prepared surgical location. We used trays and covered the table with sticky paper so it would be easy to clean, and nothing would get pig blood on it if it wasn't supposed to.  We started our surgery by suturing the eye so it looked away and giving us a clear spot to cut for the valve insertion. We put the suture through the sclera and then tied it around his ear so it wouldn't move during the surgical procedure.  We then cut the conjunctiva and created a pocket for the valve. I did the main cutting, Brinkley took pictures, and Alex helped give tools and be an extra hand in the surgery.
